B&D Wireless Safety Beams for Garage Doors

B&D Safety Beams are specially designed to prevent potential injury to people or damage to valuables. An extra level of safety to the built-in auto-reverse functionality. Features wireless infrared sensors placed on either side of your garage door, inches above the ground. When the door begins to close, the sensors are immediately activated. If a sensor recognises something in the path of the door closing, such as a child, pet or car, it stops the door and immediately reverses it back up.

B&D Wireless Safety Beams for Garage Doors

Overview

Wireless Safety Beams are critical safety devices integrated into B&D automatic garage door opener systems. These sensor-based components provide comprehensive obstruction detection to prevent accidents, injuries, and equipment damage during door operation.

Technical Specifications

Power and Electrical Characteristics

The Wireless Safety Beams operate using battery power, with standard C-Type batteries required for both the receiver and transmitter units. The system generates a nominal output voltage of 5.5 volts with a capacity of 50 milliamps when connected to the opener system.

Operational Features

The wireless safety beam system functions as a non-contact sensor that continuously monitors the door's path during closing operations. The system incorporates an IR (infrared) LED that monitors alignment and obstruction status. Communication between the transmitter and receiver occurs wirelessly, eliminating the need for extensive wiring installations.

Beam Positioning Requirements:

  • Mounted 100mm above ground level (as per AS/NZS 60335-2-95:2020)
  • Positioned as close as possible to the door opening
  • Transmitter and receiver placed in line of sight
  • Receiver positioned in shade
  • Transmitter can be in sun or shade

Safety Functions and Capabilities

Obstruction Detection

When properly installed and aligned, Wireless Safety Beams detect obstructions while the door is closing and immediately send a signal to the garage door opener to reverse or stop the door movement. This prevents the door from closing on persons, vehicles, or objects in the doorway.

Required Installation Scenarios

Wireless Safety Beams must be installed when:

  • Closing force exceeds 400N (40kg) at the bottom edge of the door
  • Smart devices are fitted to operate the door when not in line-of-sight
  • Auto-Close feature is operational or selected
  • Auto-Close After Close Obstruction feature is enabled

Auto-Close Mode Integration

The system enables the Auto-Close feature to become active, which automatically closes the door approximately 30 seconds after opening. Without functioning Safety Beams, the Auto-Close feature cannot operate.

Alignment and Positioning

Assembly and Installation

The Wireless Safety Beam assembly includes:

  1. Receiver (RX) and Transmitter (TX) units with removable front covers
  2. PE 2000TS or equivalent brackets for secure mounting
  3. M3 x 5 Taptite screws for bracket attachment
  4. M5 x 10 Pan Head Screws for bracket assembly

Brackets must be securely fastened to rigid mounting surfaces with a minimum of four screws affixed to the wall or solid structure.

Alignment Indicators

The system provides visual alignment feedback through LED indicators:

  • LED stays on solid = communication established but limits not yet set
  • LED goes out = communication established and limits are set
  • Bright light = beams properly aligned
  • Dull light with beeper sound = beams not aligned or blocked

Alignment verification typically takes up to 60 seconds after power-up for communication establishment between units.

Compatibility and Configuration

System Compatibility

Wireless Safety Beams are compatible with multiple B&D garage door opener models, including:

  • GDO-10v3 Toro (supporting up to 3 sets of beams)
  • SDO-2v2 opener (one or two sets connectable)
  • Smart Pro SDO-9 systems
  • Controll-A-Door automatic garage door openers

Connection Options

The beams connect to the opener system through designated terminals:

  • EB1 input (Safety Beam input)
  • EB2 input (second Safety Beam input)
  • V+ terminal (power for wireless devices)
  • 0V terminal (ground/common connection)

Maintenance and Testing Requirements

Regular Testing Protocol

Wireless Safety Beams must be:

  • Tested regularly at established intervals
  • Assessed and adjusted during routine servicing
  • Checked for proper alignment before each use
  • Maintained for optimal performance throughout system lifecycle

Maintenance Considerations

  • Clean transmitter and receiver lenses regularly in dusty or dirty environments
  • Monitor for battery condition (low battery warnings may appear)
  • Verify unobstructed beam path across the entire door opening
  • Ensure rigid mounting without vibration or movement

Safety Compliance and Standards

The Wireless Safety Beams comply with AS/NZS 60335-2-95:2020 safety standards for automatic garage door openers. They are designed to provide comprehensive protection regardless of the control method used (transmitter, wall button, or smart device).

Key Safety Benefits

  • Prevents entrapment of persons and animals
  • Protects property from damage due to obstructed closure
  • Enables auto-close functionality for convenience
  • Provides continuous monitoring during all door operations
  • Triggers automatic reversal upon obstruction detection
  • Reduces injury risk in both residential and commercial applications

Important Installation Notes

Critical Installation Requirement: Safety Beams must be installed and connected before setting travel limits on the garage door opener system. The exact positioning should be chosen to suit the application and environmental conditions while providing maximum safety protection.
